Illan Meslier on Leeds’ relegation: “A feeling of regret and disappointment.”

Leeds goalkeeper and U21 France international Illan Meslier (23) has reflected on Leeds’ relegation to the Championship after their 19th-place finish in the Premier League. Now on international duty with Les Bleuets as France will take part in the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, Meslier gave a wide-ranging interview with RMC Sport, in which he also discussed alleged interest from Chelsea.

Despite the last-minute appointment of veteran relegation escapist Sam Allardyce, Leeds fell short in their quest to reach safety. “We’re obviously disappointed“, laments Meslier. “Going down in the Championship… there’s a feeling of regret and disappointment.” The Lorient-born goalkeeper points out that relegation, as well as promotion, are part and parcel of the sport. The goalkeeper explains that he can’t help but think about what happened last season for Leeds. “We can’t get into this kind of situation.

Meslier became, at 23, the youngest ever player to reach a century of Premier League appearances after spending three full seasons between the Elland Road sticks. “It’s a huge source of pride and a great achievement, particularly given my age”, he smiles. Although the French goalkeeper is tied to a Championship-bound club, he indicates that he is aiming for more than 100 Premier League games. Meslier did not say to RMC Sport that he would be playing for Leeds next season, but reiterated that he is tied to the Yorkshire outfit until 2026.

Meslier’s France will play Italy on June 23rd, Norway two days later and Switzerland on June 28th. Games will be played in Cluj, Romania.
