Howe ‘prefers to trust current players‘ ahead of January window

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is set to ‘give preference to the existing players’ at his disposal over new recruits in January, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

The Magpies have defied expectations so far this season and are currently sitting in third position in the Premier League standings.

Newcastle United transfer news – January

Newcastle became the world’s richest football club when they were bought by a Saudi-backed consortium last year and have backed Howe heavily in the transfer market.

The likes of Alexander Isak, Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes have all arrived in big-money deals since the takeover.

And Newcastle’s investment has paid off, with Howe turning them into genuine contenders for European qualification this season much to the surprise of many fans, journalists and pundits alike.

There has been speculation over who the north east outfit could look to recruit over the winter window to aid their Champions League push, although it remains to be seen if further investment will arrive so soon.

What has Jacobs said about Newcastle?

Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “I think that with Newcastle, they wouldn’t have planned at the beginning of the season a particularly busy January. And that’s largely because their January, when they were struggling last season, was busy.

“And they were pretty happy with what they got in the summer, but also the chemistry, it’s not only about the players that Eddie Howe’s brought in like Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes, it’s also about Joelinton being consistent.

Howe ‘prefers to trust current players‘ ahead of January window

“It’s about Schar being excellent, it’s about Callum Wilson continuing to score goals, and the resurgence of Miguel Almiron. So, Howe is in a position where he wants to give preference to the existing players, and not really mess too much with the chemistry.

“So, what Newcastle will, I think be looking for in January, is more depth than necessarily too many standouts that are going to rock the boat.

“Because they’re Champions League contenders at the moment, they have proven that they have enough to compete with the big sides, and in some areas, they’ve got a fair amount of depth too, especially in the centre-back department.

“So, I think that there’s an acceptance at Newcastle that if they don’t have a busy January, they’ll still be content with what they’ve got.”

Who could Newcastle sign?

Back in August, The Telegraph reported that Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic was among the players Newcastle asked the Blues to be ‘kept informed about’.

Alan Shearer celebrating scoring

Premier League and Newcastle United all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer is a true legend of the game, but when did he leave their club?

And transfer insider Dean Jones has recently informed GMS that Howe’s charges would be ‘willing to consider’ a move for the USA international once more.

Pulisic’s contract only has 18 months left to run on it at Stamford Bridge, and Newcastle could look to take advantage of his lack of game time at Chelsea.
