Thomas Tuchel’s time in charge at Bayern Munich has been far from straight-forward. Taking over from Julian Nagelsmann during a crucial part of last season, Bayern ultimately ended up crashing out of the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League in disappointing fashion.
However, while the Meisterschale was lifted, it was done so in rather unconvincing fashion. It is in fact that word that could best describe Die Rekordmeister’s start to this campaign; considerably unconvincing.
Three wins to kick off their campaign was recently followed up with a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen which could be regarded as a Bundesliga classic. Nevertheless, they are yet to prove that they have turned a leaf from last season, with Tuchel claiming that Bayern need to “become more stable and grippy” if they are to improve.
The Bayern boss would further explain what lessons his side could learn from their opening games: “Sometimes we had control, sometimes we didn’t, sometimes we were compact, sometimes we weren’t. We have room for improvement.” Reflecting back to matchday three, Tuchel would indicate the type of performance he is hoping for on a consistent basis, claiming that Bayern played a “very good half in Mönchengladbach.”
Nevertheless, even against Borussia Mönchengladbach Bayern struggled to get a grip on the game during the first half. With a Champions League tie next for Bayern as they are set to face a struggling Manchester United side at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, Tuchel will be hoping for a far more consistent performance in which his side can look to replicate going forward.
