Recently-departed Barcelona defender Sergi Domínguez has this week named the Blaugrana star who left him most surprised with his talents in training.
The player in question? Frenkie de Jong.
Midfielder De Jong is for his part fresh off something of a bounce-back campaign in 2024/25, which saw the former Ajax man reestablish himself as a key figure at Barcelona.
Under the watch of new boss Hansi Flick, the 28-year-old shone from his berth at the base of the Blaugrana engine room, striking up a brilliant partnership with Pedri.
And as alluded to above, along the way, De Jong left an up-and-coming teammate in awe.
Speaking during an interview with Jijantes this week, fresh off sealing a move from Barcelona to Dinamo Zagreb, the aforementioned Sergi Domínguez was asked to highlight which member of Hansi Flick’s squad surprised him most.
This comes with the 20-year-old having been a regular in first-team training, on his way to a trio of La Liga appearances this past season.
And Domínguez, in quotes relaid by Mundo Deportivo, did not hesitate in responding:
“The player who surprised me the most was Frenkie. Everyone speaks wonders about him, but you don’t realize it until you see him training. I think it’s incredible. As a person, he’s a 10, and as a player, he’s 100.”
