Hervé Renard interested in becoming France Women’s national team manager

L’Équipe report this evening that Saudi Arabia manager Hervé Renard is interested in the now-vacant France Women’s national team job, having been named on the shortlist of potential candidates to replace Corinne Diacre.

Diacre was dismissed from her position yesterday, which she had held for the last six years, in the wake of a player exodus from the national team – led by captain Wendie Renard – as criticism of her management methods continued in the wake of a growing rift with her squad.

Her departure comes just months before the start of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, with the French FA now giving themselves several weeks to find a successor in time.

Renard is said to be interested in the job, although he remains under contract for another four years with the Saudi FA. In the wake of an impressive showing at the World Cup, in which the team beat eventual champions Argentina in the group stage, the French FA will have a hard time prising the former Morocco manager away. Renard is reportedly enticed by the prospect of taking charge of a squad with high potential for a major competition, as well as for the Olympics in 2024 – and would not necessarily make it a question of money.
