Sunderland have agreed a deal to sign Getafe defender Omar Alderete, journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed.
The Stadium of Light side have reportedly struck an agreement over a £10m deal for the Paraguay international, with personal terms also agreed on a contract until June 2029.
Alderete is set to become Sunderland’s 11th signing of the summer and the third defender to arrive, following deals for full-backs Reinildo and former West Ham United ace Arthur Masuaku.
He will take the Black Cats’ summer spending past the £130m mark and is set to become the latest star to swap La Liga for the Premier League this summer, following the likes of Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi and Everton’s Thierno Barry.
Alderete, who joined Getafe from Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2022, has been a key player for the Madrid club since, making 99 appearances across his three seasons. He helped Getafe finish 13th in La Liga last term.
Sunderland Set to Sign Omar Alderete
Romano, writing on X, has revealed that Sunderland’s deal to sign Alderete is now close to completion, with agreement in place over a deal worth £10m:
Sunderland were keen to improve their centre-back options this summer, which had not seen any changes since their promotion to the Championship before a deal for Alderete.
The Black Cats have invested heavily to rebolster Regis Le Bris’ squad over the past two months, with the likes of Granit Xhaka, Habib Diarra and Simon Adingra among the marquee signings.
Alderete will bring proven top-flight experience to the Stadium of Light, having plied his trade in the top tiers of Swiss, Spanish and German football over the past six seasons.
He has also won 27 caps for Paraguay to date and played every single minute of their Copa America campaign last summer, scoring his first international goal in the 4-1 defeat to Brazil in the group stage.
