Hansi Flick to stay on as Germany coach

Hansi Flick will remain in charge of the German national team, the DFB has announced.

The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed that Hansi Flick will remain Germany coach.
Flick’s contract expires in 2024, but his future has been in doubt following Germany’s disappointing group-stage exit at the World Cup and the resignation of national teams and academy director Oliver Bierhoff.

However, after a “friendly and constructive discussion” between Flick, DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and DFB vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke, it’s now clear that the former Bayern coach will stay in charge.

“We are jointly convinced that the 2024 European Championship in our own country represents a great opportunity for football in Germany,” commented Bernd Neuendorf.

“Our goal is to make this tournament a sporting success. We have full confidence in Hansi Flick that he will master this challenge together with his team.

“With regard to Oliver Bierhoff’s successor, we have agreed to first discuss the future structure of this area of responsibility within the DFB and then make a personnel decision.”

Hansi Flick said:

“My coaching team and I are optimistic about the European Championship in our own country. We as a team can achieve much more than we showed in Qatar. We missed a great opportunity there. We will learn our lessons from this.

“I have confidence in the joint path we agreed on today with Bernd Neuendorf and ‘Aki’ Watzke. We all want all of Germany to rally behind the national team again at the 2024 European Championship at home.”
