Germany players protest against FIFA’s ‘One Love’ ban

Germany used their warmup and pre-match team photo to send a message to FIFA regarding their decision to deny captains from wearing the One Love armband. Upon FIFA’s stance, the DFB announced on Tuesday that they’re planning to sue the organisation through the International Court of Arbitration for Sport.

With this motion in place, the DFB hoped that Manuel Neuer could wear the One Love armband during their second group stage match against Spain on Sunday without fearing any consequences. However, it seems unlikely that this will be the case.

Ahead of their first World Cup match against Japan, the German players wore shirts that displayed rainbow colours on the sleeve. They then doubled down during the pre-match team photo when every player covered their mouth displaying a clear message to FIFA that the issue won’t be simply forgotten about.

In a statement on Twitter, the DFB said: “We wanted to use our captain’s armband to take a stand for values that we hold in the Germany national team: diversity and mutual respect. Together with other nations, we wanted our voice to be heard.”

The second part read: “It wasn’t about making a political statement – human rights are non-negotiable. That should be taken for granted, but it still isn’t the case. That’s why this message is so important to us. Denying us the armband is the same as denying us a voice. We stand by our position.”
