French referee François Letexier (33) has been appointed by UEFA to officiate the Champions League quarter-finals first leg between Real Madrid and Chelsea. The game will be held at Madrid’s Estadio Santiago-Bernabéu on Wednesday, at 9pm local time.
The young 33-year-old referee has never conducted a game of this magnitude before. This season, the Frenchman has only officiated three Champions League ties, all in the group stage, including Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Dinamo Zagreb. He has never officiated a game featuring Real Madrid before.
Letexier has sparked controversy several times this season in Ligue 1 over his handling of games. He averages four yellow cards per Ligue 1 match. Letexier was notably accused of “dishonesty” by Nantes boss Antoine Kombouaré after awarding a 96th-minute penalty to Nice, when Les Canaris were 1-0 up at the Allianz Riviera last autumn.
