Borussia Dortmund and Ansgar Knauff hold talks over future

According to Bild, Borussia Dortmund and Ansgar Knauff recently held a meeting over the 21-year-old’s future at the club.

In the meeting, Dortmund could not provide a plan that suited Knauff. Since the 21-year-old joined Eintracht Frankfurt in January last year there has been an increase in competition on the wings with the acquisition of Karim Adeyemi as well as the revivals of Julian Brandt and Youssoufa Moukoko under Edin Terzic. On top of that, Dortmund may buy further attackers in the summer transfer window. All this makes it very difficult for Knauff to return and see a place in the team.

This leaves the door open for Frankfurt to sign Knauff permanently. However, Frankfurt are unwilling to pay over the odds for the 21-year-old whose contract runs out in 2024. English clubs have also reportedly enquired about the availability of Knauff.

Knauff has spent most of the season switching between the bench and starting 11. The 21-year-old has had to compete for the wing-back positions with Aurélio Buta and Dina Ebimbe on the right as well as January signing Philipp Max on the left, but with the departure of Daichi Kamada and the future of Jesper Lindstrøm currently unknown Knauff could play a role further up the field if he is to stay in Frankfurt.
