‘Four clubs interested’ in £20m star who ‘has to quit’ Hotspur Way

Tottenham Hotspur star Djed Spence ‘has to move’ during the final stages of the transfer window and up to four clubs are ‘interested’ in offering a Hotspur Way escape route, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

Spurs boss Antonio Conte is on the verge of bolstering his right wing-back options after reaching a £42million verbal agreement with Sporting for Pedro Porro.

Tottenham transfer news – Djed Spence

According to the Daily Mail, Spence has emerged as a loan target for a number of Premier League rivals just days before the fast-approaching January deadline.

The report suggests the England under-21 international, who only joined the north Londoners in a £20million deal from Middlesbrough last summer, will fall further down the pecking order after Porro’s arrival.

Alex Crook, the respected talkSPORT reporter, recently told GiveMeSport that Spence wants to seal his Tottenham exit in the coming days.

But Spurs, who have given the green light for a loan exit, have blocked a move to Brentford as the proposal included an obligation to make the switch permanent.

Southampton, Leicester City and Lyon have shown an interest in Spence, while West Ham United are also admirers.

What has Dean Jones said about Spence?

Jones understands that up to four clubs are battling to sign Spence on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

The transfer insider feels the outcast has no option but to leave his current employers in search of regular game-time, which has not been afforded to him by Conte.

When asked about the possibility of a loan departure, Jones told GiveMeSport: “I know that there are three or four other clubs that are interested in that. Djed Spence, almost certainly, has to move.”

Why has Spence found it difficult to force his way into Spurs’ right wing-back slot?

It was apparent almost immediately after Spence’s arrival that he would find it difficult to convince Conte as, via The Athletic, the Italian publicly confirmed he was a club signing rather than a player he had added to a shortlist of targets.

Therefore, it comes as little surprise that the former Nottingham Forest loanee has been restricted to just 41 minutes of action since heading to the capital, while he was not even included in the matchday squad for the FA Cup fourth round win over Preston North End on Saturday.

But it could be argued that Spence has deserved more opportunities than Emerson Royal, the £25.8million arrival from Barcelona who has regularly featured at right wing-back this season.

That is because FBref statistics show that the 22-year-old averaged more goals, assists, blocks and interceptions than the Brazilian last term.

As a result, Spence ought to feel hard done by and a loan spell away from Tottenham may be what he needs to persuade Conte to give him more opportunities in the future.
