Former Aston Villa and Everton winger will have his contract terminated over Israel-Gaza post

Anwar El Ghazi will reportedly have his contract terminated at Bundesliga club Mainz over his post about the Israel-Gaza conflict. 

The former Aston Villa and Everton winger was suspended on 17 October by the German outfit for sharing a pro-Palestinian post. 

The Dutch footballer has since deleted the post but the club also wants the player to make an apology. 

However, El Ghazi told the senior executives he stands for peace and humanity for all victims of the war. 

According to BBC Sport, Mainz have informed the 28-year-old that he will have his contract terminated. 

The forward joined the German side in January 2022 on a free transfer after he mutually terminated his deal at PSV Eindhoven. He made three substitute appearances after arriving at the Mewa Arena. 

Anwar El Ghazi started his senior career at Ajax before joining French outfit Lille in 2017. 

He came to English shores for the first time in the summer of 2018 when he signed for Aston Villa on a season-long loan. 

His impressive performances helped the Lions win Premier League promotion and he was rewarded with a four-year contract. 

The Dutchman went on to make over 100 appearances for the Midlands outfit, with 26 goals and 16 assists to his name. 

El Ghazi also had a loan stint at Everton but managed to play only two games.
