Liverpool fans were left livid with star forward Mohamed Salah in the aftermath of their game against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Ahead of what was their third Champions League game of the season, Liverpool were in the midst of a terrible run of form. The Reds had, across all competitions, lost four consecutive games, a first for Arne Slot during his career as a manager.
Worries were setting in for Liverpool, who spent heavily across the summer to prepare for their Premier League title defence. Some of their additions have hit the ground running, like Hugo Ekitike, though others have struggled to make an immediate impact at Anfield.
In Frankfurt, Liverpool fell behind to a Rasmus Kristensen goal, sparking fears that they would suffer yet another defeat. Swiftly, however, not only did Liverpool restore parity to the game, but went on to take a commanding lead. Ultimately, it was a dominating 5-1 victory for the Reds.
Despite the scoreline and some stellar performances from some of Liverpool’s players, supporters of the club were left frustrated with a modern legend for his performance.
Salah Criticised For Performance Against Eintracht
Before the game had even kicked off, there was much discussion about Liverpool’s team selection. Following defeat to Manchester United, there was an assumption that Liverpool would make a change to their team, though few would have foreseen Mohamed Salah being the one to drop to the bench.
Salah was introduced to the game in the 74th minute, by which point Liverpool were 5-1 up. The match had, earlier, seen Florian Wirtz finally get off the statistical mark against Eintracht, notching two assists in the second half after failing to contribute to any goals in his opening 10 games for the club.
Sharing the pitch with Wirtz, there was an instance in which it appeared that Salah could have made a simple pass to the German for him to score his first Liverpool goal.
Instead, the Egyptian shot and missed, with one fan noting that it was the second time in four days that Salah did not “just square it for a Wirtz tap in,” having endured a similar scenario against Man United at Anfield. Wirtz, for his part, appeared annoyed with his teammate for the decision he made.
Another fan simply wrote, “Do you see why I get so annoyed with Salah,” voicing frustrations that are currently held about the club’s talisman, who has endured a stuttering start to the season.
Victory against Eintracht felt crucial. With his minutes, however, Salah did not make a strong case to assure his place in the first team. The Egyptian has had a stuttering start to the campaign and based on his cameo against Frankfurt, it would seem that he is not yet close to his brilliant best.
“That’s so greedy from Salah, Wirtz is right there for his first goal.”
