Five Toulouse players refuse to take part in match over rainbow shirt

Local outlet La Dépêche du Midi report tonight that five Toulouse players have indicated that they do not want to play in tomorrow’s match against Nantes, as a result of the rainbow pattern on the back of players’ shirts as part of a league-wide initiative to combat homophobia.

The news follows a similar decision from Guingamp defender Donatien Gomis earlier this weekend, while the other players across France’s top divisions have taken part in the anti-homophobia campaign, with captains and managers also wearing rainbow armbands. The campaign has been in place for the last three seasons.

The five players who have expressed their disapproval of the campaign to their manager, according to the report, are Zakaria Aboukhlal, Moussa Diarra, Farès Chaïbi, Logan Costa and Saïd Hamulić. In Aboukhlal and Hamulić’s cases, their objections are an outright refusal to wear the shirt, although the club does hope to convince the group otherwise. In the meantime, manager Philippe Montanier has called up 25 players for the matchday squad, even though only 20 can be registered for the game.
