First signs of rift between Kylian Mbappé and PSG

The first signs of a rift between Paris Saint-Germain and forward Kylian Mbappé (24) have emerged, after a club spokesperson challenged the player’s entourage’s version of events in supposed renewal discussions, as reported by New York Times journalist Tariq Panja

Yesterday, the latest Mbappé saga began when the player informed the club’s hierarchy via a letter of his intention not to sign a contract renewal. The France captain’s current deal expires at the end of next season, and the option for a further year won’t be triggered.

That opens up the possibility of Mbappé leaving for a free next summer, something that PSG seem keen to avoid. Mbappé, however, is keen to remain at Les Parisiens for one final year, before departing on a free at the end of next season, as he expressed in a social media post.

Naturally, these two differing standpoints will create conflict, and this is beginning to show. PSG have, according to Panja, responded to the player’s claims, which were expressed through a communiqué sent to AFP. The statement denies the existence of any contract discussions between the player and the club.

PSG’s administrative council has been informed since 15th July 2022 of my decision not to extend beyond 2024 and the letter that was sent only served to confirm what I had only told them,” said Mbappé in the release.

A club spokesperson has now contested this statement, saying, “It is emphatically untrue to say Mbappé’s team have not been involved in renewal discussions.” The discord is now public. It remains to be seen whether there will be a reconciliation that will allow Mbappé to see out his contract and leave on a free next season, or whether he will be sold this summer.
