“England were clearly the better team”

Germany’s U21s are out of the Euros after a 2-0 defeat to England tonight. Speaking after the match, head coach Antonio Di Salvo admitted that the defeat was well deserved.

Germany’s U21 European Championship campaign came to an end tonight as Antonio Di Salvo’s men were beaten 2-0 by England in their third and final group stage match.

After picking up just one point from their first two games against Israel and Czech Republic, Germany knew they needed a win tonight to have any chance of progressing, but they were well beaten at the Adjarabet Arena in Georgia.

Cameron Archer opened the scoring for England just four minutes into the game before Harvey Elliott added a second 21 minutes from time to send England on to the win in a match in which Germany struggled to create chances.

“Things did not go the way we had hoped,” Germany U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo admitted after the match.

“We didn’t have a good start to the tournament. We missed two penalties against Israel in a game we controlled and then suffered a disappointing defeat against the Czech Republic. Today’s defeat was deserved, England were clearly the better team.

Germany’s disappointing exit from the group stage leaves them out of the running to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
