Newcastle United will find it easier to sign Leandro Trossard than James Maddison, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.
The Brighton and Leicester City stars are both thought to be targets for the Tyneside club, but Downie thinks a deal for Trossard is more likely.

What is the latest news involving Trossard and Maddison?
According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle will explore the possibility of signing Trossard in the January transfer window.
In terms of how much he could cost, the same outlet claims that Brighton value the Belgian at around £30m.
As for Maddison, who is also thought to be on Newcastle’s radar, his potential fee is likely to be double that.
During the summer, The Guardian reported that Leicester wanted £60m for the attacking midfielder after Newcastle made a £50m offer for his services.
What has Downie said about Trossard and Maddison?
Downie thinks Newcastle, Eddie Howe and sporting director Dan Ashworth will find it easier to sign Trossard than Maddison.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the Sky Sports reporter said: “We saw in the summer they were looking at Maddison. He plays a similar position to James Maddison. I just think out of the two of them, Trossard would probably be the easier one to get contractually.”
What would Trossard bring to St James’ Park?
This season, Trossard has shown that he is capable of finding the back of the net. In 13 league appearances, the 27-year-old has scored seven goals, which includes a hat-trick against Liverpool and a strike versus his former manager Graham Potter and Chelsea.
Trossard is also quite a versatile attacker, playing on the left, up front and behind the striker during his senior career.
Brighton will not want to let him go, but they do have a bit of an issue with his contract.
The Belgium international’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning the Seagulls could be forced to sell him in January. And if the price they are looking for really is around the £30m mark, then Newcastle could be in for an absolute bargain.
Given that they chased him in the summer, you suspect that Maddison is probably the attacker who is at the top of Howe’s list right now. But if they cannot get him, then Trossard would by no means be a terrible alternative.
Newcastle are having a great season and things could get even better if they manage to land a player of Trossard’s quality in January.
