Everton manager Sean Dyche could ‘get the best’ out of strikers Neal Maupay and Ellis Simms at Goodison Park, transfer insider Dean Jones has informed GIVEMESPORT.
Both players will be called on to spearhead the attack for the remainder of the campaign following the Toffees’ decision not to sign any attackers in the January window.
Everton latest news – Neal Maupay and Ellis Simms
In their 1-0 victory over Arsenal last week, Everton were dealt a blow by having to take Dominic Calvert-Lewin off with an injury, making him an injury doubt for the Merseyside derby against Liverpool next Monday, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
Coming on in his place as a substitute, Maupay acquitted himself well from the 62nd minute onwards, proving to be a handful for the Arsenal backline with his impressive work ethic and ability to spearhead the attack.
Enduring a frustrating campaign so far, the 26-year-old has managed to record just one goal and one assist for the Toffees in 2022/23, as per Transfermarkt. Salary Sport shows that Maupay earns around £49,000 a week in Merseyside on a contract that runs until June 2025.
On the other hand, Oldham-born striker Simms was recalled from a positive loan spell at Sunderland in January to try and increase the options available in the Everton forward line.
The youngster had netted seven times in 17 outings for the Black Cats and has gone on to feature twice for the Blues off the bench since returning from the North East.
What has Dean Jones said about the pair?
Transfer insider Jones believes that Dyche could be the man to ‘get the best’ out of Maupay and Simms going forward.
Jones told GMS: “I think also, you could look at two players like this and actually if anyone’s going to get the best out of players like that, it might be Sean Dyche. He’ll find ways to function with these players; Maupay’s scored goals before in the Premier League. Simms has got a lot of potential, he’s got a lot of rawness and actually, that might not be a bad thing in a position like this.”
Will Maupay and Simms have a big part to play this season?
Given that they’re both the only striking options Dyche has at his disposal beyond Calvert-Lewin, you would imagine that Maupay and Simms would have a decent level of involvement for the rest of this term.
Looking at Maupay, he possesses a fairly decent Premier League goal record despite never being heralded as a prolific marksman. In 116 English top-flight appearances, the Frenchman has netted 27 goals and laid on a further seven assists, which isn’t a horrendous tally by any stretch when you factor in his work rate and ability to ruffle the feathers of the opposition.
In the case of Simms, he is more of a project player with elements still to add to his game and probably finds himself as a third-choice striker by default due to Everton failing to add any forward players in January.
Nevertheless, the £3300 per week aces’ loan spell at Sunderland earlier in the campaign was promising, while he also enjoyed a productive stint at Heart of Midlothian last season in the Scottish Premiership, registering seven goals and two assists in 26 appearances, as per Transfermarkt.
Going forward, the duo could be given a new lease of life under Dyche, with their confidence likely to grow if Everton continue to put in positive displays on the pitch in the coming weeks.
