After announcing the sacking of Nuri Sahin as head coach on Wednesday morning, Borussia Dortmund are now looking for a replacement.
U19 coach Mike Tullberg will take over on an interim basis for Saturday’s match against Werder Bremen. But based on what Borussia Dortmund’s managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, said on Wednesday, it’s unlikely that Tullberg will be given the job permanently even if the game goes well.
“I am a big fan of promoting someone from our own ranks if they do well. But I think that in our current situation we need external input,” said Ricken, according to Kicker.
“We certainly have one or two candidates,” he added, but without elaborating “out of respect” for Nuri Sahin.
According to Sky Germany, Ricken is currently in talks with former Bayern and Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac about taking over.
The 53-year-old is said to be willing to take charge until the end of the season, with the possibility of staying on longer.
