Didier Deschamps reminisces on Chelsea stint with Greece manager Gus Poyet

France manager Didier Deschamps spoke at Les Bleus’ pre-match press conference attended to by Get French Football News about his time at Chelsea with Gus Poyet – his adversary tomorrow on the opposing bench. The Frenchman reminisced about his time with Poyet in West London during the 1999/2000 season.

“I spent one season with him, but it was a good year! There were a lot of French and Spanish speakers at Chelsea, which was good because my English wasn’t great,” began the two-time World cup winner. I’ve met him again following our time in England and we’ve spoken, he’s a great guy […] it will be great to see him tomorrow.”

However, Deschamps added that the character of the former Girondins de Bordeaux and Brighton & Hove Albion coach as a player and manager could feed into Greece’s performance against France on the pitch. “Given his origins, South Americans have aggressiveness in their DNA […] they are a very good team. They have a lot of quality when they attack and have players that like having the ball at their feet. They will be a great opponent tomorrow.”
