David Guion to renew contract as Bordeaux manager

Bordeux slim chances of promotion are still alive, just about – whether a replay of their final-day suspended match against Rodez takes place will be decided next Monday.

Should the league’s disciplinary commission hand down a points deduction as a result of a fan shoving the opposition striker, though, the game will become meaningless (for Bordeaux, at least – Rodez need the points to secure safety).

Despite the uncertainty, though, the six-time Ligue 1 winners have already begun to plan for next season. According to regional outlet Sud OuestLes Girondins have reached an agreement with head coach David Guion over a contract extension.

The former Reims manager took over midway through the campaign that saw Bordeaux finish bottom of the top flight in 2021/22.

Over the summer, he signed a one-year contract that would be automatically extended should the club seal an instant run to Ligue 1. This is now unlikely to be the case, but the upper management is intent on keeping some stability ahead of next season. Guion is now set to sign another similarly-structed contract after a verbal agreement was reached between all parties involved.

The 55-year-old has notably benefited from the support of several senior players in the squad, and his ability to develop the club’s young talents has been one of the bright spots of the campaign. His unresponsive in-game management, though, has been criticised, as well as the fact that he will likely only finish in third place with what president Gérard Lopez has called the best squad in the league.

Sud Ouest also point out that Guion is not one to publicly complain – as may have been the case with other candidates for the job, like Jean-Marc Furlan. The coach also knows that he is in a favouable position, in the sense that Bordeaux’s financial and administrative situation does not necessarily allow them to spend long on finding a new manager.
