Cristiano Ronaldo has now discussed loan exit at Old Trafford

Manchester United have discussed the possibility of sending Cristiano Ronaldo out on loan as the forward ‘still wants to leave’ Old Trafford, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Ronaldo returned to the Red Devils less than 12 months ago, but there are question marks over whether he will be on the club’s books by the time the summer window slams shut on September 1.

What’s the latest news involving Ronaldo?

Ronaldo held showdown talks with new boss Erik ten Hag and the Manchester United hierarchy when he headed back to the club’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday.

It came after the Portuguese made it clear that he wants to move onto pastures new if a satisfactory offer is tabled during the remainder of the transfer window.

But it seems the discussions did not go to plan for the Red Devils as it is understood that Ronaldo wants to be freed from the final year of his contract due to a desire to compete in the upcoming season’s Champions League.

Although the 37-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his £480,000-per-week deal, there is also an option for the agreement to be extended by a further year.

Manchester United are reportedly open to sanctioning a loan move away from Old Trafford, but only if Ronaldo commits to spending a further year with the Red Devils after that temporary switch.

What has Dean Jones said about Ronaldo?

Jones understands that Ronaldo’s stance has not changed and, having held discussions behind the scenes, he is still seeking a way out of Manchester United.

However, the transfer insider believes the former Real Madrid and Juventus man’s agent Jorge Mendes could be open to arranging a loan switch for his client.

When asked what the future holds for Ronaldo, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “He still wants to leave. I think that’s pretty clear.

“I know that the loan option was discussed and if they can try and find a breakthrough on that, then Ronaldo’s people will be keen for that to become an option.”

Who could Ronaldo join if he does leave?

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is known to have met Ronaldo’s representative Mendes, where a potential move to Stamford Bridge was discussed.

As a result, it appears a switch to Manchester United’s Premier League rivals could be on the cards for the striker, who has scored 142 goals over the course of two spells with the Red Devils.

Atletico Madrid have also upped the ante in their pursuit of Ronaldo by putting Antoine Griezmann on the market.

Napoli was mooted as a potential destination when it emerged that the 189-cap Portugal international is eager to seal his Old Trafford exit.
