Mark Flekken has officially signed a new deal in the Black Forest. The Dutchman’s last extension came in August of 2020, but as Freiburg do for most of their players, no specific details were released.
Flekken moved from MSV Duisburg to Freiburg in 2018 and after waiting patiently behind Alexander Schwolow, it was finally his turn in 2020. While warming up for the first round of the DFB-Pokal in the 2020/21 season, Flekken injured his elbow and derailed his season. Florian Müller impressed on loan, but luckily Freiburg awarded their keeper a second chance and the rest is history.
The 29-year-old was linked with a move to Ajax this summer, but he stayed at Freiburg as Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal told Flekken that consistent playing time was the key to have any chance at making the World Cup squad. Flekken is one of the best in the Bundesliga and a major reason for Freiburg’s recent success.
