After an endless series of deals that ended up falling through, Croatian winger Josip Brekalo is finally on his way back to the Serie A. VfL Wolfsburg managed to complete a deal with AFC Fiorentina for Brekalo’s permanent transfer. The 24-year-old will head back down south, wehre he thrived on loan at FC Torino during the 2021/22 campaign.
Information about a transfer fee was not released. Brekalo does receive a new contract as part of his move, but details were not disclosed. The German Wolves were certainly happy to get the sporadically used attacker off their payroll. It was rumored that Brekalo earned a whopping €230,000 monthly. This proved a stumbling block to his ultimate transfer as the Croat did not wish to take a pay-cut.
Wolfsburg supplied a terse statement thanking the winger for his commitment and wishing him all the best in his future career endeavors. VfL trainer Niko Kovadc did give Brekalo one last chance at cracking the team early in the season, but poor results ultimately led to Brekalo not being used in any meaningful way since the Bundesliga campaign’s seventh matchday.
