As reported by Kaveh Solhekol, next season’s Champions League draw will be completed by computers.
Europe’s top clubs next season will have their opponents decided by computers rather than from pots pulled by UEFA guests. The reason for this is that a manual draw format could take between three to four hours and feature 900 balls due to the new format.
Instead, a new hybrid system will be introduced where clubs are drawn manually, and then a computer will take over to select a team’s eight opponents.
The new software is operated by an English IT company with two backup systems in place. The draw will also be audited once it’s complete.
Five German teams could be competing in the new Champions League format next season, as there are two more places up for grabs.
This is based on merit from this season’s Champions League. As it stands, Italy and Germany will receive the additional two spots.
