A press conference Wednesday began with a tribute to British boxing legend Ricky Hatton, who was found dead on the 14th of September by his manager. “We heard the tragic news that the great Ricky Hatton had so sadly passed away at the age of 46,” said Matchroom content manager Jamie Ward at the start of the media event, before praising the Hall-of-Famer for how he carried himself in the ring, and outside of it.
But the tributes stopped there.
Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn, who promoted Campbell Hatton — Ricky’s son — wanted to share his own words, too, but Chris Eubank Jr kept shooting him down when he was on the mic.
It showed that, even with an industry in mourning, Eubank and Hearn were unable to bury the hatchet of their rivalry, and continued their war of words ahead of the upcoming rematch against Hearn’s boxer Conor Benn on the 15th of November at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England.
Chris Eubank Jr & Eddie Hearn Remain at Odds
Though Eubank is fighting Benn, and not Hearn, the boxer and promoter could not hide their animosity toward one another. And that spilled over at the mid-week media event.
When Hearn tried to speak, Eubank immediately cut him off. Hearn attempted to clarify that, rather than forcing fans to hear them argue, he wanted to have “30 seconds” to speak about Hatton. But Eubank wasn’t having any of it, and said he didn’t want to have to listen to “anything you have to say.”
“You are some a**-hole,” Hearn said. To which Eubank later said they needed to “move on with the press conference.”
“You’re an a**-hole, you talk s***, [and] you’ll get what’s coming to you.”
Watch the interaction right here:
It wasn’t the only time they clashed on stage.
Eubank overcame Benn in an all-out slug-fest earlier in the year, and Eubank and Benn’s promoter Hearn continued to quarrel over what happened during and after the event, as they gear toward a second fight in the series in two months’ time.
Speaking to DAZN, which will air the rematch, Hearn said after the event that Eubank’s “mask is slipping.”
He added: “That was atrocious from Chris Eubank Jr. He has made wild accusations. He wants to portray how he’s the victim, all I wanted to say was a few words about Ricky Hatton. I don’t care about Chris Eubank Jr. The guy, for me, is a fake. And he’s trying to make out that everything is stacked against him. What he accused us of is unforgettable.”
