The Guardian are reporting that Chelsea have are poised to acquire a stake in Ligue 1 side Racing Club de Strasbourg.
The news comes in the wake of an announcement from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, who opened up the possibility of two clubs with the same owner playing in the same European competition. The potential change would also be of consequence to Manchester United, with OGC Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe engaged in a bid to buy the Premier League club. The English billionaire, along with an INEOS delegation are in Manchester today to discuss the acquisition of the club, although they face considerable competition from a Qatari consortium.
Ceferin’s announcement has also made Chelsea accelerate in their efforts to purchase a minority share in Strasbourg, who are currently 15th in Ligue 1 and only outside the relegation zone on goal difference. The club’s president, Marc Keller, confirmed earlier this month that conversations with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly over a full or partial sale had taken place. Those conversations have since intensified with Chelsea now poised to buy a stake in the club.
Since taking over the club last year, Boehly has been keen to create a multi-club model. Chelsea have also sounded out the possibility of purchasing stakes in clubs in Belgium and Portugal. However, Strasbourg is a good solution given that the club are in search of investment and the fact that France has one of the richest talent pools, not only in Europe but in the world.
