Chelsea are ‘not planning to reopen talks’ over a new contract for out-of-favour goalkeeper Edouard Mendy at this moment in time, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
The 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge since the arrival of new manager Graham Potter and could be set for a new challenge over the coming months.
Chelsea transfer news – Edouard Mendy
Back in September, the Evening Standard revealed that Chelsea had made tying down Mendy and Mason Mount to fresh terms their next priority after Reece James committed his future to the club.
It was disclosed that the Senegal international had already rejected one offer of a new deal from the west London outfit as he was offered inferior terms to backup keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Since then though, Mendy has lost his place in the starting XI to Kepa and also made a couple of mistakes during the World Cup against the Netherlands, plunging his future into doubt.
Italian outlet TuttoJuve have claimed that the 6 foot 4 ace has already been offered to Tottenham Hotspur and that Juventus are also interested in prising him away from Chelsea.
What has Phillips said about Mendy?
Phillips has informed GiveMeSport that a decision will not be made on Mendy’s future until the conclusion of the current campaign and that both the club and player want to assess their options.

He said: “Chelsea want to assess this situation come the end of the season, so nothing’s going to happen before then. Obviously, they went into contract talks with Mendy two months ago; they’ve been stalled and stopped.
“Chelsea, at the moment, are not planning to reopen talks and people on Mendy’s side as well are quite keen to assess their options. So, they’re going to wait and see how it goes for the rest of the season.”
Who could Chelsea sign as a replacement?
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea are ‘monitoring’ Pickford alongside other keepers as they still need to ‘make a decision’ over their current options in goal.
“Jordan Pickford is one of the goalkeepers Chelsea are monitoring at the moment, not the only one but nothing is advanced or concrete yet,” Romano said.
“For sure, they need to make a decision on Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga. I think they’re both very good goalkeepers, but they need full confidence otherwise it makes no sense to continue.”
Only time will tell who Potter opts to make a move for, but it seems unlikely that Mendy, who was signed for £22 million, will be signing a new contract anytime soon.
