Chelsea are interested in luring Inter Milan duo Milan Skriniar and Denzel Dumfries to Stamford Bridge before the transfer window slams shut, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.
The Blues are under new ownership after a Todd Boehly-led consortium completed a £4.25billion takeover in May, but head coach Thomas Tuchel is still being backed in the transfer market.
What’s the latest news involving Skriniar and Dumfries?
Chelsea appear to have missed out on adding Sevilla defender Jules Kounde to their squad as, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Frenchman is on his way to Barcelona.
It is understood that the Blues have now turned their attentions towards signing Dumfries after their latest frustration in the transfer market.
Inter are reportedly willing to sell the Netherlands international right-back, who earns £64,000-per-week at the San Siro, if a bid worth £33.5million is tabled.
According to Italian media outlet Calciomercato, Chelsea have held discussions with agent Paolo Busardo ahead of a potential move for Dumfries’ team-mate Skriniar.
The report suggests Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the 54-cap Slovakia international centre-half, but they are not willing to match Inter’s £58.6million valuation.
What has Ben Jacobs said about the situation?
Jacobs understands that Skriniar, whose £90,000-per-week Inter contract expires in less than 12 months’ time, and Dumfries are firmly on Chelsea’s radar.
The journalist feels the Blues could pounce for Skriniar as PSG have fallen short of his current employers’ demands, while Dumfries may also secure a switch to Stamford Bridge.
Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT: “We know that Chelsea are interested in both of those players.
“Skriniar has a challenge because he’s agreed personal terms with PSG, but they’ve not been able to get a fee and they feel like the asking price that Inter are saying for Skriniar – of around €70million – is too high, so that’s stalled, which means the door is open to a team like Chelsea.
“Whether or not they’re prepared to pay the €70million asking price remains to be seen.
“Dumfries could well be a viable target as well, so those are two names to keep an eye on.”
Why is Tuchel looking to add defenders to his squad?
Tuchel has already seen Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leave this summer, following the expiry of their respective contracts, and that has left the German short of senior defensive options.
Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso also want to depart Stamford Bridge for Barcelona, so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he could have an even bigger void to fill.
As a result, even though Kalidou Koulibaly has completed a £33million move from Napoli, further reinforcements would be welcome in west London.
