According to Florian Plettenberg, FC Augsburg have rejected Celtic’s opening offer for midfielder Arne Engels.
It had previously been reported that the Scottish outfit were looking to lure Engels away from the Bundesliga as a replacement for Matt O’Riley, who recently joined Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
However, Celtic have seen their opening offer for the 20-year-old rejected.
It is understood that the Scottish champions submitted a bid in the region of €6.5 million but are expected to come back with an improved offer.
Nevertheless, Augsburg are not interested in selling the versatile midfielder, despite being informed by Engels that he wishes to leave for Celtic Park.
As stated in the report, the Fuggerstädter would only listen to offers between €13 and €15 million for the Belgian U-21 international.
The Bundesliga side view Engels as a key player for their upcoming campaign, having started both of Augsburg’s first two competitive games of the season.
