Third round games were played across two windows – weeks commencing September 8 and 15. Nine Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester United, joined at this point. There were a total of 32 clubs and thus 16 ties.

A number of games (Everton vs Wolves and Liverpool vs Tottenham) had to be rescheduled following a conflict with UEFA’s Champions League scheduling. The EFL explained in a statement: “The EFL has been left with no option than to rearrange a number of its fixtures following the announcement of fixture details for the league phase of the UEFA Champions League. On 28 August, we confirmed that the Carabao Cup Round Three tie between Everton and Wolves had been scheduled for Wednesday 9 September.

“This was confirmed with local stakeholders as per usual practice ahead of announcement. On Saturday, UEFA announced that it had scheduled Liverpool v Atletico Madrid for the same date, despite it being clear that Everton and Liverpool cannot play home fixtures on the same evening.

“The EFL met with UEFA officials on Monday morning to explore available options, however in those discussions it was made clear that they were unwilling to consider rescheduling the Liverpool v Atletico Madrid fixture, and avoiding the consequences for other fixtures as a result.”

The draw for the fourth round of the 2026/27 Carabao Cup took place on Wednesday September 16, 2026. It was held as part of the television coverage of the game between Manchester United and Brighton, which saw the Seagulls come out on top.

Everton are still yet to welcome Newcastle to Merseyside in the final tie of the round. But Sunderland and Bournemouth progressed after home wins against Brentford and Aston Villa, respectively. Manchester City knocked Brighton out on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Liverpool and Chelsea also went to a shootout at Anfield after Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo converted from the spot in normal time. Xabi Alonso and Jordan Henderson were sent out of the cup on their return to Anfield as Wesley Fofana missed the crucial spot kick.

There will be lower-league representation in the next round as Bradford City play Peterborough United, while Fleetwood Town will be buoyant after they managed to spring an upset on Arsenal.
