‘Can’t Cope’ – Paul Scholes Labels 3 Man Utd Stars Finished Before Liverpool Game

Paul Scholes has called out three Manchester United players ahead of their return to Premier League action.

Following the October international break, Man United will play bitter rivals Liverpool in their return clash to top flight football. The Red Devils revamped their attack before the campaign began, as manager Ruben Amorim finally have a pre-season and full summer transfer window after joining the club in late 2024.

Continued inconsistencies from Amorim’s side has seen significant pressure rise on the Portuguese, even though Sir Jim Ratcliffe, owner of INEOS, has publicly announced his intention of continuing with Amorim in charge.

They will be facing a Liverpool side who, before the international break, lost three consecutive games across the Premier League and Champions League. The defending champions are undergoing their toughest stretch of form since Arne Slot arrived at the club and the game between them and the Red Devils is massive for both teams.

Ahead of the game, however, Scholes has, speaking to The Times as per Manchester Evening News, named three current Man United players that he feels are no longer at the desired level.

For some time, the standard of players at Man United has been called into question. Under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, the club became accustomed to winning, or at least contending, for most major honours available to them. This standard has slipped in recent years, with their league finish last season being the lowest of their Premier League era.

In that vein of thinking, Scholes has noted that there are a number of current Man United players who the club should probably part ways with. He said:

“[Luke] Shaw, [Harry] Maguire, Casemiro, they’ve all been great players but they’re at a stage of their career now where you get found out in the Premier League if you’re not physically good enough. Their bodies are not athletic enough, they’re not strong enough, they’re not quick enough.

“They’ve dropped to a level where they can’t cope with what’s needed in the Premier League. Every player in the Premier League is an absolute machine. They’ve got five per cent body fat, they can run, they’re strong, they can head it. Manchester United are carrying two or three players that are just not capable of living with it.”

All three of the players mentioned by Scholes are at least 30 years old, with their best years at Man United now, generally, being behind them. Though all are still either starters or members of the squad, they are in the bracket of players that Man United must look to move on in the near future if they hope to truly start contending for honours once again.
