Callum Hudson-Odoi set for return to Chelsea after poor spell at Bayer Leverkusen

Callum Hudson-Odoi will return to Chelsea this summer after failing to impress on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, according to Sky Germany.

The 22-year-old has scored only one goal and registered one assist in his 17 appearances for Die Werkself. Neither the player nor the club wants to continue their relationship beyond this season.

Hudson-Odoi joined Bayer Leverkusen during the summer transfer window, hoping for playing time in Germany. While he has gotten time on the pitch, he has not repaid it with his performances.

His measly goal contributions and penchant for becoming inconspicuous during games have left the Bundesliga side unimpressed.

Hudson-Odoi started on the bench in the first game following the return of the Bundesliga after the 2022 FIFA World Cup break. He came on for the final 15 minutes but could not do anything against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Head coach Xabi Alonso decided to start him in the next game against Bochum. But the Englishman barely influenced the game, and the Spaniard brought him off at halftime.

Hudson-Odoi was once a target for Bayern Munich, but Chelsea fought tooth and nail to keep him away from the Bavarians.

However, the Cobham academy graduate has since suffered injuries that have halted his development. He went to Germany to get consistent game time, but it has not gone according to plan.

Hudson-Odoi will struggle to find space in Chelsea upon his return this summer, with the club adding wingers like Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Noni Madueke.

There are reports that Arsenal are monitoring the situation of the London-born winger. The Gunners missed out on Mudryk to Chelsea and could return to the Blues for Hudson-Odoi.

The reports claim that the three-cap England international will push for an exit upon returning to Chelsea. If he does, the North London club will be one of the clubs waiting for him. His contract with Chelsea expires in 2024.
