German officiating legend Dr. Felix Brych was supposed to be commemorating a special milestone during Saturday evening’s Bundesliga “Top-Spiel” between Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart. The 48-year-old’s 344th top flight-match drew him level with fellow legend Wolfgang Stark for the record number of Bundesliga games refereed by an official.
Brych was obviously set to break Stark’s record this season, but will now have to wait a considerable time after a nasty injury left him unable to finish the match. Brych had to retreat to the sidelines after incurring a nasty knee knock. Brych finished the first-half with heavy bandaging, but had to make way for colleague Patrick Schwengers in the second half.
Speaking to Sky Germany after the match, Brych revealed that he would be out long-term with what he suspected to be an ACL tear. The injury might sideline him for the duration of the season. Brych briefly conveyed sad emotions before departing to a Frankfurt University hospital for further tests.
“I thought to myself, ‘this can’t be true’,” Brych dejectedly told the Sky mics, “It’s a grim diagnosis. I’m a bit down.”
