Borussia Mönchengladbach expected to earn record transfer fee for Manu Koné

According to the latest edition of Sport Bild, Borussia Mönchengladbach may allow Manu Koné to leave the Bundesliga club in the summer after Die Fohlen bosses calculate a loss between €10m and €15m for the 2022 calendar year.

“The spring of this year was again characterised by corona restrictions, which hit the clubs hard. A deficit in this financial year can therefore hardly be avoided without a significant transfer surplus,” said BMG managing director Stephan Schippers.

Koné arrived in Germany from Toulouse for €9m in January 2021 and has a contract until 2025. Borussia Mönchengladbach rejected an approach from Newcastle United in the summer but they may be forced into reassessing the situation. Should the Frenchman leave, Gladbach can expect to receive upwards of €45m, the fee they received in 2016 from Arsenal for Granit Xhaka.

“It would be good if we achieved a transfer surplus next summer,” added Schippers. “But it’s not necessary for survival because the club’s economic situation is too stable for that thanks to the solid work in previous years.”

Koné has played 12 games across the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal for Gladbach this season. The French youth international has established himself as one of Europe’s most talented progressive midfielders over the last 18 months.
