SportBild reports that Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is set to be rewarded with a new contract and responsibilities at the club.
The current contract of the 25-year-old expires in 2026 having joined from VfB Stuttgart in 2021 for €15m, with the new contract, Kobel’s current salary is set to be doubled. This will also put to an end any chance of the goalkeeper leaving anytime soon as Manchester United and Chelsea have both previously shown interest.
There will also be more responsibility for the goalkeeper at the club. Kobel will move up the dressing room hierarchy as he is well-liked within the squad. It is likely that he will join the team council and replace Jude Bellingham as third captain behind Marco Reus and Mats Hummels when the 19-year-old leaves.
Kobel has been one of Dortmund’s standout players this season and he is one of the reasons behind their mid-season turnaround. The 25-year-old has played 33 times for Dortmund this season and has kept 14 clean sheets.
