The fear of saying openly how you are feeling has silenced dozens, hundreds, and even thousands of athletes for years.
“A lot of the time we are ashamed to say that we are having a bad time,” Real Betis and Spanish international striker Borja Iglesias tells Relevo.
“I used to say that going to the psychologist exposes me a lot in front of my team-mates.”
Remiro speaks out
Real Sociedad goalkeeper Álex Remiro has also spoken about players opening up to their team-mates, family and friends.
“I saw a player crying after training… I sat down with him and told him: ‘I’m going to give you the number of my psychologist’,” he explains to Relevo.
“Please talk to someone who will listen to you,” he continued.
On talking about the benefits of using psychologists in general, Iglesias, who has to deal with the pressure of playing top-flight football in Spain, adds: “You realise that you feel better, that it is good for you”.
