The AFP reports this afternoon that former Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy has been found not guilty of rape and attempted rape.
The Frenchman had been found not guilty of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault back in January, with the jury unable to reach a verdict on one count of rape and one of attempted rape which led to this summer’s retrial.
As outlined by Sky News, the former Marseille and Monaco player was accused of raping a 24-year-old woman at his mansion in Cheshire in October 2020. The attempted rape charge concerned an alleged event taking place two years earlier. Mendy denied both charges and was found not guilty by a jury made up of six men and six women at Chester Crown Court. They had been sent out for delibration at 10.40am local time this Friday.
The 28-year-old was suspended by Manchester City following his arrest in 2021, and was released at the end of his contract this summer.
