According to Bild, Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund met with Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi during Bayern’s time in Portugal.
Zubimendi is one of five players on Bayern’s list as they look for a new defensive midfielder in the summer. The 24-year-old reportedly has a release clause in his contract worth €60m. Fulham Joao Palhinha is also on the list as well as an unnamed Englishman.
Defensive midfield has been one of the problem areas for Bayern since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel. While it is clear that Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich can no longer work together in a midfield pair, Tuchel believes that there is no senior player who could play in that position. This resulted in a mad dash for Palhinha at the end of the summer window which did not materialise.
In the winter, Bayern have slightly addressed the issue of defensive midfielder as they have brought in Eric Dier on a short-term deal from Tottenham, but Tuchel has previously stated he would only be used in midfield in the worst-case scenario due to the emergence of Aleksander Pavlovic this season.
