According to Sky Germany, Bayern Munich are now looking to sign Yann Sommer from Borussia Mönchengladbach as a recall of Alexander Nübel from Monaco looks unlikely.
As per the report, Bayern have already made contact with the 34-year-old’s representatives and talks are ongoing in the background. Bayern can imagine Sommer playing for the club this season.
This comes as a deal to recall loanee Alexander Nübel looks increasingly unlikely. Monaco are demanding a seven-figure number as part of reparations for the early recall, which Bayern are unwilling to pay. What’s more, the 26-year-old wanted more certainty about his role at the club when Neuer return from his injury. Add to the mix that Nübel reportedly didn’t want to come back if goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalović was still at the club, a return was always against the odds.
It’s now clear that the Gladbach captain is the preferred candidate as Neuer’s replacement. Sommer was already close to leaving the club last summer when he was heavily linked with a move to French side Nice. The pull of Bayern Munich and potential silverware could be enough to persuade the Swiss international.
