When Josip Stanišić signed for Bayer Leverkusen on a season-long loan in the summer from Bayern Munich, many were left confused. As Bouna Sarr remained the club’s only like-for-like replacement for Noussair Mazraoui, there were expectations that Die Rekordmeister were ready to bring someone in.
However, while rumours were circulating regarding a potential move for Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, Bayern elected against progressing a deal for the Englishman. This has ultimately left Thomas Tuchel utilising Konrad Laimer at right-back due to the lack of trust placed in Sarr.
Nevertheless, despite Leverkusen looking to challenge Bayern for the Meisterschale, Stanišić has failed to make an impression for Xabi Alonso’s side. With just one league start and three substitute appearances, neither Bayern nor Stanišić are content with how this loan has transpired.
This has led to the Rekordmeister requesting an early termination of the loan. However, as reported by Sky Germany, this has been firmly rejected by Die Werkself.
Despite only receiving limited minutes so far this season, Alonso is happy with the 23-year-old’s performances. As well as this, Edmond Taposba and Odilon Kossounou are set to take part in the African Cup of Nations in January, meaning that Stanišić will be heavily relied upon.
Therefore, if Bayern are to add depth to their defensive areas, they will have to find a temporary solution in January.
