Unsurprisingly enough, the FC Augsburg players had to contend with an angry ultra block following yesterday’s humiliating home defeat against RB Leipzig. As is customary in German football, players must face the FanKurve after the match. FCA supporters were naturally not pleased to have spent a Saturday afternoon watching their team incur their second-ever most lopsided Bundesliga defeat.
“The ultras were fed up,” ever-outspoken Augsburg attacker Fabian Rieder noted in the mixed zone yesterday. “It was still a good and honest exchange [with the Kurve]. Truthfully, what can I say? To lose 0-6 is total shit. We have to listen to the fans who are rightly dissatisfied with us. We must answer for this shitty result.“
Rieder was among one of several players – Kristijian Jakic, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, and Robin Fellhauer being some of the others – who directly engaged with the fans in the ultra block. There was something of a confrontation between supporters involving Gouweleeuw and Jakic, but Fellhauer was quick to play it down.
“The fans are heartbroken,” Fellhauer explained. “They made that clear to us. I’m glad that we’ll get a chance to show them something different [in two forthcoming home fixtures against Bochum in the Pokal on Tuesday and against Borussia Dortmund next Friday night].“
“We don’t want to lose either,” Rieder also noted. “There’s nothing much to explain. We remain our own harshest critics. It’s only the eighth matchday. We’ve still got an incredible amount of games left to play. We must stick to the path.“
