Atletico Madrid are prioritising a move for Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso this summer, as per Marca.
Los Rojiblancos are eyeing more reinforcements in the transfer window as they aim to return to their best following a disappointing 2024/25 season.
They have been exploring a move for their former midfielder Thomas Partey, whose contract with Arsenal expires this summer.
However, they are now looking to pull out of the race due to Ghanaian international’s high salary demands.
Atletico have turned their attention towards Betis’ Cardoso, who has quickly grown into one of the best midfielders in the Spanish top flight.
The USMNT star’s influence also extends beyond La Liga this season, playing a pivotal role for Betis to reach the finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League, where they will face Chelsea.
He has been a vital cog in Manuel Pellegrini’s side, bagging four goals and one assist in 45 appearances in all competitions this term.
The young defensive midfielder is known for his tenacity and the ability to read the game, averaging 2.38 tackles and 2.01 interceptions per game.
Cardoso’s robust nature also allows him to excel in both ground and aerial duels.
Despite recently extending his contract until 2030, Betis are open to selling him this summer to balance their books.

Tottenham Hotspur have an option to sign the United States star for €25 million this summer, a clause they agreed on as part of Giovani Lo Celso’s sale to Betis last year.
However, the clause will be only active for a few weeks during the window, and if they fail to trigger it, Betis will likely demand a huge sum for Cardoso.
Atletico are undeterred by the midfielder’s higher price, and they are keen on adding him to their ranks.
Colchoneros manager Diego Simeone highly admires Cardoso’s talent and believes he can be an integral part of the club’s long-term future.
Atletico are also looking to sign Tottenham defender Cristian Romero this summer.
