Atlético Madrid are leading the race to sign U.S. national team midfielder Johnny Cardoso from
Real Betis, sources tell GIVEMESPORT.
While nothing is yet agreed or being finalized, Cardoso is leaning towards Atlético Madrid ahead of
Tottenham Hotspur and other suitors. The transfer fee is expected to be in the region of €30 million, sources say, with no club-to-club agreement yet as negotiations continue.
Tottenham had negotiated a pre-agreed, fixed price of around €25 million for Cardoso as part of the loan deal to send Giovanni Lo Celso to Betis. That clause is active for a small window towards the early part of summer before it expires. With that setting the market, Atlético Madrid are able to keep the price down, though Betis would receive a bit more money than if he went to Spurs.
Spurs feel Cardoso prefers to stay in Spain, sources say. Wolverhampton made an approach in January, but never made an offer because a winter deal was unlikely. They remained interested as well, but Atlético Madrid are in the driver’s seat.
Juventus and AC Milan are two other clubs thought to be serious suitors for Cardoso this summer.
Cardoso Developing Into Top Holding Midfielder
Carodso, 23, joined Betis in January 2024 from Brazilian side Internacional. Born in New Jersey but raised in Brazil, Johnny came through Internacional’s academy and began his career in Brazil, making 144 appearances.
Since arriving in Spain 18 months ago, Cardoso has excelled for Betis. He has been a key starter, important to their run to the UEFA Conference League final as well as delivering memorable performances, including a goal against Real Madrid in a big Betis win.
Cardoso has 18 caps with the USMNT. He’s in the squad for summer friendlies and the Gold Cup.
Atlético Madrid finished third in La Liga behind Real Madrid and Barcelona, qualifying for the Champions League.
