There have been very few NBA guards quite as talented as Allen Iverson. The Philadelphia 76ers icon was beloved for his dazzling play on the court and famously was never afraid to take it to anyone he came up against. He was a showman, but also an incredible scorer, averaging 26.7 points-per-game over the course of his career. He could play at either point guard or shooting guard and won the MVP award in 2001 for his exploits.
To some, he’s one of the greatest point guards of all time and was ranked as such by fans. When he was asked to name the best of the best, though, during an interview with Kevin Hart on Cold as Balls, he chose to name four other stars who played the one and didn’t include himself in his list. Rather than rank them from best to worst, he simply named the four point guards that he thought were the best in NBA history and he didn’t include John Stockton. As per Forbes, his four greatest point guards of all time are below.
Allen Iverson’s Greatest Point Guards Ever
Magic Johnson
The first player Iverson named is one of the greatest point guards of all time, so it’s hardly surprising to see that he chose Magic Johnson for his list. The former Los Angeles Lakers man changed the sport and he helped spearhead one of the greatest teams in the franchise’s illustrious history.
Johnson won multiple MVP awards and if health issues hadn’t cut his career short, there’s no telling just how much more he could have done. Still, in the 11 seasons he had before his initial retirement, he dominated, becoming the greatest passer basketball had ever seen as well as one of the sport’s greatest showmen.
Stephen Curry
If Johnson isn’t the greatest point guard of all time, then it’s this man. Stephen Curry has been a force of nature since he arrived in the NBA and his prowess from behind the three-point line actually changed the way basketball is played now. He’s the greatest shooter of all time and the first ever unanimous MVP winner in NBA history.
With the Golden State Warriors, Curry created one of the greatest teams to ever play in the association and he was at the heart of it. There’s never been anyone quite like him and at 37 years old, he’s still showing no signs of slowing down. There’s never been a player like Curry, but there have been multiple point guards in the years since who have tried to replicate his magic from deep.
Isiah Thomas
One of the most disrespected guards of all time, Isiah Thomas was a problem during his career and helped form one of the msot notorious teams of all time in the ‘Bad Boy’ Detroit Pistons. They were hard-hitting, tough and they were never afraid of the grind. They were monsters on the court and Thomas led them to getting the better of Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and Johnson’s LA Lakers over the years.
His team was famous for their rough style, but Thomas was much more than that. He was an incredible scorer, but also an excellent playmaker and seemingly took joy from setting up his teammates up to scorer on the court. His feud with Jordan has seen many downplay how good he was during his career, but Iverson is clearly well aware of how good Thomas was.
Chris Paul
The last player Iverson named is another point guard that’s started to become a little disrespected over the years. Chris Paul is nicknamed ‘Point God’ for a reason and is one of the greatest guards in NBA history. Whether it was for the New Orleans Hornets, the Los Angeles Clippers or the Houston Rockets, he was an exceptional player and a true leader on the court.
He has never gotten his hands on an NBA championship and to some, that has lowered his stock as one of the all-time greats. Former Boston Celtics big man Kendrick Perkins even recently revealed that he didn’t think Paul was a top 10 point guard of all time. Iverson clearly disagrees, however, and has the now-40-year-old on his list as one of the four greatest.
