Alexa Bliss’ long awaited return to WWE may have resulted in the formation of one of the company’s most surprisingly successful new tag teams in some time, but fans are still keen to see what lies in store for Bliss with the Wyatt Sicks.
Bliss was memorably paired with the late Bray Wyatt during the pandemic era, even scoring a PLE victory over Randy Orton in a singles match at one point. The feud between Wyatt’s ‘The Fiend’ character and Orton lasted over six months, all the way through to WrestleMania 37, in which a gothic queen version of Bliss sat atop a novelty sized Jack-In-The-Box, while a black substance cascaded down her face from a crown on her head.
‘The Fiend’ Transformed Alexa Bliss During The Pandemic Era
It was quite the visual. The entire feud was a cinematic spectacle, evoking memories of everyone from The Undertaker to Papa Shango in terms of the supernatural elements that were thrown at the ThunderDome-based feud, with no fans able to attend due to COVID protocols.
Wyatt’s ‘The Fiend’ was part of a new split personality he debuted at SummerSlam 2019. A couple of months later he would capture the WWE Title from Seth Rollins in Saudi Arabia (a few weeks after their infamous and much maligned ‘disqualification finish’ inside Hell In A Cell) before dropping it to Goldberg in the same country several months later in a booking decision that, well, let’s just say it wasn’t particularly well received by fans and just leave it there, shall we?
As WWE entered the Performance Center and ThunderDome days of the pandemic, however, while many struggled with the new, soulless environments sans fans, Wyatt’s Fiend character seemed to thrive, splitting between his horror movie monster and Mr. Rogers style alter-egos, while sometimes even drifting back to swamp-sequestered cult leader Wyatt. And with Bliss on board for the Orton program, the lore was exacerbated to unbelieveable levels, including but not limited to The Fiend being burned alive, Orton coughing up mysterious black mucus, Bliss pinning Orton in an actual one-on-one match and all manner of mindbending trickery that could thrive in an audience-free live setting.
Alexa Bliss Loved Bray Wyatt’s ‘Inspirational’ Creative Process
With WWE Unreal recently peeling back the curtain of the company’s creative process, we decided to ask Bliss during an exclusive interview over SummerSlam weekend in New Jersey about the late Wyatt’s approach to creative and storytelling and where he drew his inspiration from to bring his weird and wonderful ideas to life on WWE television.
“Oh my god, it was such an inspirational thing to be a part of. To watch Windham work, to watch him pull all his ideas together. He would always be so excited about these plans he had for his various characters, for my character, for what we could do with Randy. He could just bring inspiration in from anywhere. We would all sit down in a room and he would tell us about something he had seen on a documentary the previous night and how he could use that. It was amazing to see his mind work.”
Wyatt wasn’t the sole creative voice with his work, however, as Bliss reveals the whole process was a collaborative one.
“Oh, Windham would always encourage our ideas. Everyone was allowed to contribute. I loved that about it all. He was so passionate about what we were doing that it was so easy to bring our own ideas for our characters to the table if we wanted to. He could be so detailed with every bit of the story, right down to little hidden details that he wanted the fans to discover or work out for themselves.
“He had such a creative imagination. That entire run was so much fun, because we were doing things that had never really been seen or done before, and it was Windham’s imagination brought to life. I was so lucky to be a part of it all.”
Are The Wyatt Sicks On The Horizon For Alexa Bliss?
Wyatt, of course, would tragically pass away at the age of 36, in 2023, after returning to WWE in 2022 following his release the previous year. Wyatt’s younger brother, once known as Bo Dallas, is now known by the moniker Uncle Howdy and heading up the Wyatt Sicks faction, which is, at some point, expected to tie Alexa into their own story, given her past with Bray.
For the moment though, Bliss is focused on retaining the Women’s Tag Team Titles with Charlotte Flair for as long as she can, having won the belts from Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez at SummerSlam. The unlikely couple have been an instant success and a shot in the arm for Charlotte as a babyface character.
For Bliss, meanwhile, after two years away after becoming a mother for the first time, there feels like a lot of missed time is being made up for with her 2025 comeback. How long that is allowed to advance without Howdy and the rest of the Sicks becoming involved remains to be seen, but whenever that reunion with Wyatt’s world does occur, you can be sure some creative sparks are going to fly.
