Ajax terminate Jordan Henderson contract after one year

Ajax have confirmed that Jordan Henderson has left the club after terminating his contract by mutual consent.

The 35-year-old joined the Dutch powerhouse on a free transfer in January 2024 after cutting short an ill-advised move to Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq.

Henderson made 45 appearances for Ajax last season, returning a goal and six assists across all competitions.

He initially signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Dutch club but decided to leave earlier than expected after making a total of 57 appearances for Ajax.

“I would like to express my immense gratitude to everyone associated with Ajax for giving me the opportunity to represent this incredible institution over the past few years,” he said.

“To play for this club was an honour in itself. To have the privilege of captaining it was even more so.

“My only regret is that we didn’t deliver more success for the amazing supporters. They deserve to be celebrating major titles again, and I’m sure that time will come soon.”

There are rumours linking Henderson with an emotional return to Sunderland. However, multiple reports have ruled out a return to his boyhood club this summer.

With Sunderland out of the mix, speculation about Henderson’s next destination has become a hot topic.

The Englishman wants to join a club where he can play regularly and boost his chances of making Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.

He still has options in the Premier League and abroad. Reports from Portugal have suggested that Henderson might reunite with Francesco Farioli at Porto, but that remains to be seen.

Henderson began his career at Sunderland and made over 70 league appearances for the Black Cats.

But he’s no part of their summer plans. The Premier League newcomers have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market.

They recently agreed a deal to sign Simon Adingra from Brighton & Hove Albion, making him their sixth summer addition to Regis Le Bris’ side.

Talks are ongoing for a new goalkeeper after missing out on Djordje Petrovic, and the club is also in discussions to sign a new striker and a central defender.
