AC Milan are set to call off the loan deal for Nigerian forward Victor Boniface following extensive medical examinations that revealed concerns with his right knee, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Rossoneri had agreed a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen with a €5 million fee and an option to buy valued up to €30 million, but the transfer has all but collapsed due to doubts over Boniface’s fitness.
Boniface underwent multiple rounds of medical tests at Milan’s Centro Ambrosiano and the Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute.
The examinations showed that his right knee, which had been surgically repaired twice following anterior cruciate ligament injuries, is not currently at 100% capacity.
Despite his recent injury problems mostly being muscular, the lingering impact of the past ACL tears prompted Milan’s medical staff to exercise caution.
The conclusion from both the medical and technical staff was that signing an attacker with such a significant fitness question posed too much risk.
As a result, Victor Boniface will return to Bayer Leverkusen, where he remains under contract until 2028.
Meanwhile, Milan will now look elsewhere to reinforce their attacking options as they target bringing in two new forwards before the close of the summer transfer window.
They have previously been linked with a move for Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund and could now reignite their interest, although Serie A champions Napoli look to be in the driving seat to land the Danish striker. Sporting CP’s Conrad Harder is also a potential candidate.
Milan suffered a 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Cremonese in their opening league fixture on Saturday and will now look to bounce back against Leece on Friday.
