In comments published on Liverpool F.C.’s website, trainer Jürgen Klopp noted that he received messages from former players of his in Germany congratulating him on the “major coup” that was VfB Stuttgart captain Wataru Endo’s move to the Isle. Klopp acknowledged that the 30-year-old’s club would certainly miss him, but called the €20 million base transfer fee (plus a reported €5 million in add-ons) “a very good deal for Stuttgart”.
“It’s a really good deal for him one year before his contract expires,” Klopp noted, “It’s good for him, his club, and us. People have messaged me saying things like ‘I’ve wanted to sign him for years’. There were a lot of positives coming from Germany. He’s super highly regarded.”
“He’s a really good player,” Klopp continued, “Experienced. Captain of Stuttgart. Captain of Japan. Speaks English well. Nice guy. Family man. A machine on the pitch. A sensational attitude and a good footballer to boot. I’m really happy. We’re going to have a lot of fun with him.”
