Karl Toko Ekambi (30) is on the verge of completing a move to Saudi Pro League side Abha Club, according to a report from L’Equipe.
The Cameroon international was deemed surplus to requirements at the Groupama Stadium. Toko Ekambi himself wanted to move on after severing ties with the Lyon fans without a possible way back. In an interview with So Foot, the former Villarreal forward blasted the abuse levelled at him by Lyon supporters, insinuating he was, like some of his teammates, discriminated against on ethnic grounds.
Toko Ekambi spent the last six months of the past Ligue 1 campaign on loan at Stade Rennais – without making a significant impact. The French publication understands that Lyon agreed a €1.7m transfer fee with both Abha Club and Turkish Süper Lig outfit Fenerbahçe. The Cameroon international eventually chose to join the Gulf Kingdom. His departure will free up space on Lyon’s wage bill. Les Gones will look to find a replacement for Toko-Ekambi in the coming weeks.
